Art criticism is so often boring, stuffy, institutional or without much to say. Written by the same handful of people who read it, an echo chamber of the same ideas. Exhibition reviews in Melbourne only focus on major events at public and commercial galleries and leave large gaps when looking at the bigger picture of this city as a whole. Lowbrow is here to make this space accessible, focusing on emerging artists and emerging writers, giving a platform to new voices with new things to say. Engaging with the art in Melbourne in a digestible and approachable way. Lowbrow is the creative project of Bec Gynes.
about Lowbrow
Bec Gynes
I’m a Libra who doesn’t believe in astrology and I’m nursing a mild addiction to Pepsi Max. I hold a Master’s of Arts Management from RMIT (where I met Charlotte!) with focus on curating and community arts engagement, and a BA in Fine Arts from the VCA. Hypocritically, I have a hatred for the institutionalisation of arts education. Email me about anything, I love to chat!

I’m an Australian-Canadian arts worker living and working in Melbourne/Naarm. I hold a BA in art history from the University of British Columbia, with a focus on depictions of women and female artists, alongside completing an MA at RMIT in Arts Management (with Bec!) My research interests include protest art, postmodernism, and curation. I grew up moving between Canada, Australia, India, and Sri Lanka, and my work reflects an enduring interest in transnational stories and my inability to focus on anything.
